The Chennai Super Kings were on the verge of winning the title for the third time. We almost did it, but in the end, KKR held their nerve and edged us out. Yes, you win some and you lose some and especially in T20, the tides can turn pretty quick. Yesterday the tides turned in favor of KKR. This does not make me love CSK any lesser. In fact, having been a follower and supporter of CSK, I now have a much greater deal of respect for this team. It is a team I admire, not just for them winning games, but for quite a few things that lacks in most other teams.
Looking back at all the 5 seasons, CSK has believed in consistency as far as the team is concerned. We have retained and shown faith in most of the players we had from the first season on, while other teams buy, sell, trade and shuffle its players. This unique team composition has been one of the reasons for the success of CSK. We were the 1st year finalist, semifinalist on the 2nd year, and winners during the 3rd and 4th edition and finalist during the 5th. Throw in the Champions league victory in between as well. If that does not make us the most consistent team, then I have no clue what will.
Another thing that struck me was the image that CSK has maintained all through these five years. We are purely about cricket and nothing else. No one is greater than the game itself and we very strongly believed in that, unlike few teams where the focus was a lot on unnecessary characters like SRK, Preety Zinta, The Mallayas and of course a hoard of other Bollywood celebrities who know jack about the game. SRK of course thinks he is the greatest and everything else comes after him. No surprise that he was booed by the Chepauk crowd, each time his face flashed on the screen. Quite frankly, Chepauk is always about cricket only, and we were not there to see SRK wave and throw flying kisses.
CSK trusts and gives a lot of importance to local players. Badrinath, Vijay, Ashwin, Yo Mahesh and a whole lot more. They have delivered for us and even when they don't, we have placed our trust in their abilities. Most importantly, we are a team that has fired when it mattered the most. A lion has no option but to attack when cornered, and that is exactly what CSK has done. In the last few editions, we were on the verge of getting knocked out, but we have clawed back into contention when it has mattered the most.
We have never had an orange cap, nor a purple cap. So what happened to all the teams that had those caps? We were one unit and we played like a unit, relying on team strength than on individual strength and that is what has brought us this far. Without doubt, we have been the most consistent team ever.
So another season has passed and a year in between before we hit season 6. No matter what happens, and no matter how many we win or lose, CSK is the team to beat. CSK is my team. It's our team and each time they take stage, we shall roar with pride.
